What a Tankini Actually Is

The question of what a tankini is has a short answer: a tank-style top worn with a separate bottom. The name is a straight compound of tank top and bikini, and it arrived in the late 1990s to fill a gap nothing else covered. The top reaches somewhere between the natural waist and the hip, the bottom is a brief, a short or a skirt, and the two stay separate garments even when they are sold as a pair.

That definition sets the boundary with everything nearby. A one piece joins top and bottom in a single panel of fabric. A bikini top stops under the bust. A tankini covers the torso the way the first does while coming apart the way the second does, and listings that mix tankini bikini styles for women together are pointing at that middle ground rather than at a third garment.

British shoppers often call it a swimming costume tankini. It is the same thing under a different regional word, and it describes the amount of coverage rather than the construction.

The Point of the Shape

Ask what a tankini is for and the answer is rarely modesty on its own. It is the shape you reach for when the day involves getting changed in a cubicle, using a bathroom without undressing completely, or pulling something dry on over a wet suit at four in the afternoon. Tankinis with skirts put a light panel over a lined brief, so the swimming is done by the brief and the walking is done by the skirt. Above the waist the same spread applies. Halter necks lift through a diagonal line, underwire versions carry a fuller bust on a band, and blouson cuts skim the middle rather than following it.

Are Tankinis Still in Style?

Prints and proportions move — higher necks one season, longer hems the next, ruffles in and out — but the two-part construction has held because it solves a practical problem rather than a decorative one.
